Leviathan

Leviathan

What does the word Leviathan mean?

The name Leviathan comes from the Hebrew Livyatan, which comes from a root that means “to twist, turn, wind, or coil.” Today the name is often used to refer generally to a sea monster or to any gigantic powerful thing.

The Leviathan is often depicted as an embodiment of chaos that threatens to eat the damned after death. However, the Bible also shows different relationships between God and Leviathan, such as in Psalm 74:14 and Isaiah 51:9, where Leviathan is portrayed as an enemy that God easily defeats. Christian theologians have also associated Leviathan with the demon of envy.

Leviathan will eventually be hunted and defeated, and its flesh will serve as food for the righteous.

Leviathan

In the Old Testament, Leviathan appears in Psalms 74:14 as a multiheaded sea serpent that is killed by God and given as food to the Hebrews in the wilderness. In Isaiah 27:1, Leviathan is a serpent and a symbol of Israel’s enemies, who will be slain by God. In Job 41, it is a sea monster and a symbol of God’s power of creation.

In one psalm, Leviathan is a whalelike creature, perhaps embodying the wonder and strangeness of creation. In the Book of Isaiah, Leviathan is a sea serpent symbolizing Israel’s enemies. In the Book of Job, Leviathan is a fire-breathing crocodile, perhaps personifying an aspect of creation that is beyond human comprehension or control.

“Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? Or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? Or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto thee? Will he speak soft words unto thee? Will he make a covenant with thee? Wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? Or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? Shall they part him among the merchants? Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? Or his head with fish spears? Lay thine hand upon him, Remember the battle, do no more. Behold, the hope of him is in vain: Shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? None is so fierce that dare stir him up: Who then is able to stand before me? Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. I will not conceal his parts, Nor his power, nor his comely proportion. Who can discover the face of his garment? Or who can come to him with his double bridle? Who can open the doors of his face? His teeth are terrible round about. His scales are his pride, Shut up together as with a close seal. One is so near to another, That no air can come between them. They are joined one to another, They stick together, that they cannot be sundered. By his neesings a light doth shine, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lamps, And sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, As out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindleth coals, And a flame goeth out of his mouth. In his neck remaineth strength, And sorrow is turned into joy before him. The flakes of his flesh are joined together: They are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved. His heart is as firm as a stone; Yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: By reason of breakings they purify themselves. The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: The spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. He esteemeth iron as straw, And brass as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee: Slingstones are turned with him into stubble. Darts are counted as stubble: He laugheth at the shaking of a spear. Sharp stones are under him: He spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: He maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. He maketh a path to shine after him; One would think the deep to be hoary. Upon earth there is not his like, Who is made without fear. He beholdeth all high things: He is a king over all the children of pride.”

In response to God’s speech, Job humbles himself. God rebukes the three friends for adding to Job’s suffering by their false assumptions and critical attitudes. Job’s material possessions and family are restored, and he receives even greater blessings than he had before. Those who persist in trusting God will be rewarded.

JOB AND JESUS

The book of Job is intimately tied to the New Testament because Job’s questions and problems are answered perfectly in Jesus Christ.

Reference In Job

“For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, And we should come together in judgment. Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, That might lay his hand upon us both.”

“If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait, Till my change come.”

“Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And my record is on high.”

“For I know that my redeemer liveth, And that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:”

“Oh that I knew where I might find him! That I might come even to his seat! I would order my cause before him, And fill my mouth with arguments. I would know the words which he would answer me, And understand what he would say unto me.”

“Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: Yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.”

How Jesus Is The Answer

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”

“For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:”

“but this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”

“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Note: However, that God came to Job, demonstrating his Love and Care for him.

According to the Bible, the Leviathan is an evil, serpent-like spirit sent to spread lies and break its victims’ relationship with God. If you’ve been struggling with pride and arrogance, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with the Leviathan spirit. If you need help removing yourself from its clutches, we’re here to help. In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Leviathan spirit, its characteristics and tactics, and how to defeat it.

  • • The Leviathan is an evil, scaled spirit from the Bible. It is known for lying and twisting the truth to manipulate its victims.

  • The Leviathan breaks covenants like marriage by causing strife and arguments.

  • To defeat the Leviathan, you must ask God for forgiveness and rededicate yourself to Him.

The Leviathan is a manipulative, serpent-like spirit from the Bible. It’s often described as having thick, hard scales and living in seas or rivers. The Leviathan is known for lying and manipulating the truth in order to break covenants with others and with God.[1] There are several references to the Leviathan spirit in the Bible:

  • In Isaiah 27:1, “In that day, the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and Leviathan the twisted serpent; and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea.”

  • In Job 3:8, “Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.”

  • In Job 41:1, "Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook, or press down his tongue with a cord?”

  • In Psalms 74:14, “You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces. You gave him as food to people and desert creatures.”

  • In Psalms 104:26, “There the ships go, and Leviathan, whom you formed to play there.” The Leviathan twists the truth. The Leviathan specializes in spinning the truth in its victims' minds. Someone can tell the victim one thing, and they’ll hear something completely different. If you’re dealing with the Leviathan spirit, look for manipulation and half-truths.[2] It breaks relationships. One of the Leviathan spirit’s primary goals is to destroy covenants of all kinds, but especially the marriage covenant. The Leviathan is believed to be the cause of almost all divorces. When dealing with the Leviathan, look for signs of pridefulness and always placing blame on others.[3]

  1. It destroys the victim’s relationship with God. Not only does Leviathan break relationships between people, but it causes the victim to doubt their relationship with God. It often twists Scripture and whispers lies about God, creating anger and resentment toward Him. The victim will feel lost and confused and doubt God’s involvement in their life.[4] It causes stubbornness. The Leviathan is often described as stiff-necked, meaning it cannot easily be moved. If you think someone is being attacked by the Leviathan, look for signs of severe stubbornness. The victim will believe they are always right and will refuse to do anything that wasn’t their idea.[5]

  2. The Leviathan makes you cold-hearted. A victim of the Leviathan will often seem robotic and overly nonchalant. They’ll seem unfeeling and unsympathetic, unable to relate to or care about others. Their true self is trapped beneath the Leviathan’s scales.[6] The Leviathan is proud and arrogant. The spirit of pride offers the Leviathan’s victims a false sense of identity. It convinces them they’re special and causes them to commit idolatry by self-worship. Look for someone who mocks and invalidates others and their relationship with God.[7] It destroys leaders. The Leviathan often targets the pridefulness in leaders and influencers. It will help lift them up just to watch them fall from greater heights. It wants as many witnesses as possible to watch the leader’s destruction.[8] It causes depression. Whenever a victim is dealing with a demonic presence, they will suffer from depression at some point or another. This is caused by the spirit of heaviness, as the human soul was not meant to live in darkness. Live in humility. To fight the Leviathan, you must stay humble. Listen to your leaders and take accountability for your actions. Continue to pray and turn to God for assistance.[9] 2 Ask God for forgiveness. Whether you have accidentally been used by or purposely worked with the Leviathan, you need to repent. When you know you’re ready to walk away from Leviathan and truly mean it, pray to God so that He may forgive you.[10] 3 Become born again. After you’ve asked for forgiveness, you must accept Jesus into your heart. Rededicate yourself to Him so that you can wield power in His name.[11] 4 Cast out the spirit. Call on the power of Jesus to remove the evil spirit from your life. Break all covenants you made with the Leviathan, no matter how small and subtle. When a child of God wields His power, the spirit has no choice but to obey.[12] 5 Stay alert. Spirits like the Leviathan will often keep pushing boundaries to try to get back in. Remain strong in your faith and continue to live by the Word of God so you don’t fall victim again.[13]
