GREAT LAKES

Building Foundations

“Sailor’s Journey Begins”

As the intensity of week one settles into routine, week two pushes your recruit deeper into the transformation from civilian to Sailor. This week builds the core foundations of discipline, resilience, and teamwork that every Sailor must possess before joining the Fleet.

Training continues to blend classroom instruction, military drill, inspections, and physical conditioning, reinforcing the high standards expected of the United States Navy. By the end of the week, recruits will begin experiencing their first formal inspections, receive key uniform items, and make their first visit to the Navy Exchange (NEX).

Before getting into the details, families are encouraged to visit and save the Recruit Training Command’s official website, which provides important information about graduation and how to complete the Graduation Access Form for the day your Sailor earns the title.

Learning the Ropes — and the Responsibilities of a Sailor

Week two of Navy boot camp sharpens both the mind and warrior spirit of your future Sailor. While the physical demands continue, much of this week focuses on developing the knowledge, discipline, and confidence needed to operate aboard ships and in operational units around the world.

Recruits begin learning the structure of the Navy, including enlisted rates and officer ranks, helping them understand how leadership and responsibilities are organized throughout the service. Understanding the chain of command is essential in an environment where teamwork, accountability, and clear communication are critical to mission success.

During First Aid training, recruits learn how to respond to injuries and medical emergencies that could occur aboard ships or in operational environments. From treating minor wounds to understanding how to support emergency medical situations, these lessons reinforce the responsibility every Sailor has to look after their shipmates.

Another key topic this week is Operational Stress Control, which teaches recruits how to recognize stress, remain focused under pressure, and support fellow Sailors during demanding situations. These lessons build resilience and reinforce the Navy’s emphasis on mental readiness alongside physical strength.

Recruits also begin experiencing Personnel and Material Inspections, where attention to detail becomes second nature. From perfectly folded uniforms to meticulously organized lockers and racks, these inspections teach pride, discipline, and the importance of maintaining Navy standards at all times.

One memorable milestone this week is the Dress Uniform Issue. Being fitted for their Navy dress uniform is an exciting moment for recruits, symbolizing their progress and connecting them to generations of Sailors who have proudly worn the uniform while serving around the globe.

Discipline and Attention to Detail

Physical training and drill exercises continue throughout the week, reinforcing the core values of discipline and meticulous attention to detail. Repetitive tasks, known as “reps and sets,” become the norm, instilling habits of cleanliness, precision, and teamwork.  Barracks inspections and written tests act as constant evaluations,  pushing recruits to showcase their dedication and newly acquired skills.

Knowledge, Discipline, And Preparation

Academically, recruits complete Knowledge Test I, their first major evaluation of the information they have been studying. Subjects include Navy history, customs and courtesies, the 11 General Orders of a Sentry, watch standing responsibilities, ship and aircraft recognition, and basic seamanship skills.

Seamanship classes introduce recruits to one of the Navy’s oldest traditions — learning the ropes. Through knot tying and line handling instruction, recruits begin mastering fundamental maritime skills that Sailors have relied upon for centuries.

Recruits also receive an introduction to the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP, the military’s long-term retirement savings program. This early financial education helps Sailors begin thinking about their future while building responsible habits early in their careers.

The Phone Call Home

One of the most anticipated moments for families during week two is Phone Call I. Many recruits are given their first opportunity to call home since arriving at Recruit Training Command.

While these calls are often brief, they provide recruits a chance to reconnect with loved ones and let families hear how their Sailor is progressing through training. For many families, hearing their recruit’s voice again after the intensity of the first weeks of boot camp is a powerful and reassuring moment.

It is important to note that phone calls are not guaranteed, and the day, time, and length of the call can vary depending on the training schedule and division activities. Recruits are only allowed to make calls when their training schedule permits.

If you do receive a call, be ready for a quick conversation. A few words of encouragement, letting them know you are proud of them, and reminding them that everyone back home supports their journey can make a big difference.

Even if the call is short or if one does not occur this week, your letters continue to be one of the most meaningful ways to motivate your future Sailor as they push forward through training.

I’ll see you next week with more insights and stories during this pivotal time for you and your Recruit.
