GREAT LAKES

TESTING SKILLS & BUILDING CONFIDENCE

“PROVING WHAT THEY’VE LEARNED”

Week six marks an important point in your recruit’s journey through Navy boot camp. After weeks of instruction, physical conditioning, and hands-on training, recruits now begin demonstrating the skills and knowledge they have developed.

This week focuses on assessments that measure their progress—both academically and practically. From firefighting exercises to inspections and academic testing, recruits must show they can apply the lessons learned during the first half of training.

Each challenge strengthens their confidence and reinforces the teamwork required of every Sailor serving aboard ships worldwide.

Damage Control – Protecting The Ship

During week six, recruits continue building upon their Damage Control training, one of the most critical responsibilities every Sailor must master.

At sea, Sailors must be prepared to protect their ship and fellow crew members from hazards such as fire, smoke, flooding, and chemical threats. Damage control training teaches recruits to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.

This phase introduces hands-on fire team training, where recruits work together to respond to simulated shipboard emergencies. They learn how to:

  • Don protective firefighting gear

  • Operate firefighting equipment

  • Work as coordinated teams to control and extinguish fires

  • Maintain watertight integrity of the ship

These intense exercises reinforce an important Navy principle:

Every Sailor must be ready to protect the ship and their shipmates.

Fire Fighting Application FIRE

Firefighting Applications place recruits into realistic training scenarios that simulate shipboard fires.

Wearing protective equipment and breathing apparatus, recruits must enter controlled training environments filled with heat and smoke. Working as a team, they practice containing and extinguishing fires while maintaining communication and situational awareness.

These evolutions test not only their technical skills but also their problem-solving ability, teamwork, and ability to remain calm under pressure—all essential traits for Sailors operating in real-world emergencies.

Academic Excellence

Week six also includes Knowledge Test II, the second major academic evaluation during boot camp.

This test measures how well recruits have absorbed important Navy knowledge taught in the classroom, including topics such as:

  • Navy history and traditions

  • Customs and courtesies

  • Watch standing procedures

  • Damage control and shipboard safety

  • Naval leadership principles

Success on this test demonstrates that recruits are developing the knowledge necessary to serve effectively in the Fleet.

Symbolic Milestones

The Personnel Inspection is a meticulously orchestrated event, far more than a simple check of appearances.  It’s a comprehensive assessment of a recruit’s attention to detail, reflecting their commitment to the high standards of Naval service.  From the perfectly aligned gig line, the gleaming shine on their shoes, and the crispness of their creases, every element is scrutinized.  This intense focus on even the smallest detail reinforces the importance of precision and pride, qualities essential for any Sailor.  Moreover, when recruits don the uniform, they become symbols of the Navy itself.

The inspection serves as a reminder that they represent something larger than themselves, and that their personal conduct and bearing directly reflect upon the entire organization.  It instills a sense of responsibility and reinforces the understanding that upholding the Navy’s reputation is paramount.

Beyond the assessments, your recruit will experience a symbolic haircut, signifying their progress through training. This will serve as a tangible reminder of how far they’ve come and motivate them to continue.

Photo time! Your recruit’s division will have a photo taken at the Navy Exchange (NEX) photo lab. This cherished keepsake will capture this special time in their journey and remind them of the bonds they forged with their fellow recruits.

Sailorization – Becoming A Sailor

Throughout training, recruits undergo a process known as Sailorization.

Sailorization is designed to introduce recruits to the Navy way of life, helping them understand what it truly means to serve as a Sailor. Through mentorship from Recruit Division Commanders, instructors, and leadership staff, recruits learn the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

This process helps shape their expectations for life in the Fleet while preparing them with the mindset and discipline required for naval service.

Every lesson, every drill, and every challenge brings them closer to becoming a professional Sailor ready to serve around the world.

I’ll continue to provide insights into your recruit’s journey through boot camp. Stay tuned for updates on Week seven and beyond, including the latest developments, letter-writing ideas, and more.
