GREAT LAKES
THE FINAL TRANSFORMATION
“BATTLE STATIONS”
Week eight marks the beginning of the final stretch of your recruit’s journey through Navy boot camp. After weeks of intense physical training, classroom instruction, inspections, and hands-on exercises, recruits now prepare for the culminating event that will test everything they have learned.

This week is both exciting and demanding as recruits push themselves mentally and physically in preparation for the final challenge that stands between them and earning the title of United States Navy Sailor.
Official Fitness Assessment and Maintenance Shape
The week begins with the Official Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA)—an important milestone required for graduation.
Recruits have been preparing for this assessment since the day they arrived at Recruit Training Command. The test includes:
Timed push-ups
Timed plank hold
1.5-mile run
The Culminatin Event – Battle Stations
Battle Stations is the ultimate capstone event of Navy boot camp.
This intense 12-hour overnight exercisechallenges recruits with a series of realistic shipboard scenarios designed to test every skill they have learned throughout training.
During Battle Stations, recruits must demonstrate their ability to perform critical Navy tasks, including:
Seamanship and shipboard operations
Damage control and firefighting
Team leadership and communication
Problem-solving under pressure
Emergency response procedures
Unlike previous training events, recruits must complete these challenges without instructor assistance, proving they can operate independently as members of a naval crew.
Battle Stations is physically demanding, mentally exhausting, and incredibly rewarding. It represents the final proving ground where recruits demonstrate they are ready to join the Fleet.
“I am A United States Sailor”
Once recruits successfully complete Battle Stations, they experience one of the most emotional moments of boot camp—the Capping Ceremony.
During this ceremony, recruits receive the Navy ball cap and officially earn the title United States Sailor. It is the moment when their transformation from civilian to Sailor becomes complete. For the first time as Sailors, they proudly recite the Sailor’s Creed, reaffirming their commitment to the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
The ” I’m A Sailor Phone Call”
After completing Battle Stations, many new Sailors are given the opportunity to make a special phone call home—often referred to as the “I’m a Sailor Call.”
This call allows them to share the incredible news that they have successfully completed the final test of boot camp and earned the title United States Navy Sailor.
For families, this moment is often emotional and unforgettable.
One Team – One Fight
Following Battle Stations, Sailors may participate in the Damage Control Olympics (DC Olympics).
This exciting event places divisions in friendly competition as they demonstrate their firefighting skills, teamwork, and physical endurance through simulated emergency response scenarios.
Divisions compete for the Captain’s Cup Flag, a symbol of teamwork, pride, and excellence.
Preparing For Graduation
Graduation is now just around the corner, and families should begin preparing for this incredible milestone.
Important reminders:
All guests attending the graduation must be on the access list
Tickets for Navy Basic Training (Pass-In-Review) graduations are free and obtained in person at the Recruit Family Welcome Center inside the Navy Exchange (NEX) Burkey Mall, 2650 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL. Guests must bring a valid photo ID (Real ID, passport, or military ID) to pick up tickets, which are usually available on Wednesday or Thursday of graduation week.
Up-to-date information can always be found on the official RTC website
You have Been Instrumental In Their Success
Your support has played a vital role in your Sailor’s journey through boot camp.
The letters, encouragement, and pride you’ve shared have helped push them through long days of training and challenging moments along the way.
Now, as they stand on the edge of graduation, you can take pride in knowing that your support helped them reach this incredible achievement.
Stay tuned for the final update as we prepare for Graduation Week and the moment your Sailor officially joins the Fleet.
I’m SgtMaj Paul Davis (USMC Ret), and I look forward to sharing the final chapter of this incredible journey with you.
