Dissociative identity disorder (DID)
And Synaptic Pruning
By: Kenyatta Ruth
Dissociative identity disorder
Also called: DID, multiple personality disorder
A disorder characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states.
Dissociative identity disorder, previously called multiple personality disorder, is usually a reaction to trauma as a way to help a person avoid bad memories.
Causes
What causes a person to develop dissociative identity disorder
The disorders most often form in children subjected to long-term physical, sexual or emotional abuse or, less often, a home environment that's frightening or highly unpredictable. The stress of war or natural disasters also can bring on dissociative disorders. Personal identity is still forming during childhood.

Symptoms of dissociative identity disorder (criteria for diagnosis) include: The existence of two or more distinct identities (or “personality states”). The distinct identities are accompanied by changes in behavior, memory and thinking. The signs and symptoms may be observed by others or reported by the individual. But with effective treatment from mental health providers who are trained in trauma and dissociation or able to receive consultation with someone trained, people with DID can and do recover. People with DID can live full and productive lives.
It’s nearly impossible to get a mental-psychologically ill minded (adverse, pernicious) individual to soundly reason or to operate within logical boundaries.. It’s out of their capability, Especially if certain health services and resources aren’t readily available to them..
He or she may even deny help or assistances provided. For various reasons. There’re multifarious to directly or indirectly allude!

Here’s why!
The disruptions or breakdowns of memory, consciousness or awareness, identity and/or perception — mental functions that normally work smoothly.
If ever these functions are disrupted, dissociative symptoms result. Some symptoms are mild, some are moderate, and others are severe, to the point where they interfere with nature, mammals or a person’s general functioning, in all aspects of natural (rai·son d'ê·tre) this French word literally defines ‘reason for being’.. : reason or justification for existence....
Disruptions or breakdowns of memory, consciousness or awareness, identity and/or perception causes Dissociative identity disorder (DID). Formerly known as Personality disorder.

Dissociation is often thought of as a coping mechanism that a person uses to disconnect from a stressful or traumatic situation, or to separate traumatic memories from normal awareness. It is a way for a person to break the connection with the outside world, and create distance from an awareness of what is actually occurring...
Dissociation can serve as a defense mechanism against the physiological, psychological, physical, mental, emotional or spiritual pain of a traumatic or stressful experience. By dissociating painful memories from everyday thought processes, a person can use dissociation to maintain a relatively healthy level of functioning, as though the trauma had not occurred.

Episodes of DID can be triggered by a variety of real and symbolic traumas, including mild events such as being involved in a minor traffic accident, adult illness, stress, anxiety, depression, ptsd or fear. Or a reminder of childhood abuse for a parent may be when their child reaches the same age at which the parent was abused.
This psychological condition is caused by several more factors, including severe trauma during early childhood/adulthood (usually extreme, repetitive physical, sexual, or emotional abuse) and prolonged isolation..

What is a synaptic pruning?
Synaptic pruning refers to the process by which extra neurons and synaptic connections are eliminated in order to increase the efficiency of neuronal transmissions.
It is thought to be the brain's way of removing connections in the brain that are no longer needed.
What is synaptic pruning example?
Synaptic pruning happens when we lose these synaptic connections because we do not need them. For instance, if you learned a few words of Spanish in 9th grade but never studied it again, those connections you made have probably been pruned by now which is why you can't speak Spanish anymore.

The two important processes (synaptic pruning and programmed cell death) are operative across childhood/adulthood. Synaptic pruning first begins at 8 months in the visual cortex and 24 months and continues to the mid 20’s in mammals and humans, in the frontal cerebral cortex, removing unnecessary excitatory and inhibitory synaptic connections.
Early synaptic pruning is mostly influenced by our genes. ... Constant stimulation causes synapses to grow and become permanent. But if a child or adult receives little stimulation the brain will keep fewer of those connections. Also prolonged solitary confinement have identical (causes and effects), that causes affects on physiological and biological nature.

Synaptic pruning is a natural process that occurs in the brain between early childhood and adulthood. During synaptic pruning, the brain eliminates extra synapses. Synapses are brain structures that allows the neurons to transmit an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron.
Smith points out that the mice with too many brain connections, which do not undergo synaptic pruning, are able to learn spatial locations, but are unable to re-learn new locations after the initial learning, suggesting that too many brain connections may limit learning potential.
And:
By forgetting, we prioritize and separate the useful from the irrelevant and more easily reorganize information to learn.

Pruning Process refers to the normally occurring processthat change and reduce the number of neurons, synapses and axons that exist within the brain and nervous system.
The period of pruning, in which the brain actually loses gray matter, is as important for brain development as is the period of growth.
Jesus said that “every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit” (John 15:2).
Pruning removes dead and dying branches and stubs, allowing room for new growth and protections from damage. It also deters infestation and promotes the natural shape and healthy growth of people, animals and nature. Pruning balances the natural order and growth of things.

On the whole, synaptic pruning is an important part of growth and development. Old, unused synapses are lost during pruning. ... So, overall synaptic pruning isn't just good, but vital a vital part of your body's maintenance. It is only when the process is not done properly it could be considered as bad.......
Clustering of synaptic vesicles
Synaptic lipid vesicles are proposed to be clustered together by partitioning into synapsin 1 droplets. Upon synapsin 1 phosphorylation by CaMKII, the droplets dissolve, leading to the release of synaptic vesicles to the membrane for fusion and delivery of their neurotransmitter cargo into the synaptic cleft..
Along with dissociation and multiple or split personalities, mammals and people with dissociative disorders normally experience a number of other psychiatric problems, including symptoms:
Depressions / Torment
Severe Mood swings
Suicidal or Homicidal tendencies
Sleep disorders, insomnia, night terrors, night sweats, and sleep walking.
Anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD and phobias
(flashbacks, reactions to stimuli or "triggers") self- sabotage & Sabotaging of others.
Alcohol and drug abuse
Compulsions and rituals
Psychotic-like symptoms (including auditory and visual hallucinations
Eating disorders
